Opening of Meeting, Introductions & Announcements. Sinead called the meeting to order at 5:35pm. We convened at the Disciples Center, 301 NW 36th Street.
(1) Announcements: The directors addressed a couple of items of general interest.
Our community service project for Nelson Mandela Day was “great,” according to those who participated. About 5 of us worked the food pantry at Mercy Mission.
On August 24th, we will enjoy Trivia Night at The Barrel, 4308 N. Western, in OKC. It will be part of the “Think Global / Drink Local” series – for our Young Professionals Network (YPN). The fun starts at 6pm.
The YPN planning committee will meet after this meeting to discuss planning of activities in September and October.
(2) Program Planning. The board considered the planning of future events.
(a) Peace Day. Priya reported that our observance of the International Day of Peace – which was scheduled to include two events – is now back to one. The Turkish Festival, which had been set for September 9th, has been postponed ‘til next spring. The good news is that we are proceeding with plans to dedicate a temporary exhibit of Pinwheels for Peace at the State Capitol on Thursday, September 21st. There will be speakers from several organizations as the pinwheels are deployed on the Capitol lawn, 6 to 8pm.
(b) Our plans for United Nations Day are still forming. We think a panel of local community leaders will be more attractive than a national speaker. This year’s theme is “Global Goals, Local Leaders.”
The date is unsettled. We’re hoping that Nancy is able to get approval from Mayflower Church to use their community hall. We’ll request Saturday, October 21st or October 28th.
Priya suggested that we should plan a little something to express our appreciation for Larry Eberhardt and Jarrett Jobe. Each of them has helped to support our chapter so much over the years.
More brainstorming: Richard White suggested the names of several people who might be invited to form a panel. We would like to find some smart, knowledgeable folks who can speak about Peace, Gender Equality, Poverty and Economic Justice, Health, Food and Sustainability, etc.
Traditionally, this event has been a luncheon. Finger food was suggested, served at tables. Michelle said we should ask Olive Garden about catering. Sometimes they will provide a discount for non-profit groups. Other options were suggested, as well.
Ticket pricing: Regular, $20; Student, $10. For people without a lot of money, we might offer “Scholarships Available.”
(3) Business Reports.
Minutes of the July Meeting. The minutes of the July meeting were reviewed. A motion for approval was made, and a second was heard. Motion carried.

Communications Report. Richard invited everyone to let him know if you have any ideas about news to share on Facebook and other social media platforms.
(4) New Business. Priya gave us an update on the controversy involving the human rights award.
The Oklahoma Universal Human Rights Alliance (OUHRA) re-considered its decision to recognize Kendall Wayne Vowell with an award in 2015. The Alliance decided to rescind the award to Mr. Vowell. Instead, they gave the award to “the family of” Kendall Wayne Vowell – expanding the award, in effect, to include his parents. They started a program for inmates with developmental disabilities.
(5) Tasks. We are looking for a volunteer to step into the role of Chapter Secretary. Also, the office of Treasurer is available to anyone who has a knack for managing money and keeping a balance. Let Sinead know if you are interested.
